# Desktop app

The Speak AI desktop app is the Speak AI app for your computer. It records meetings, your screen and your microphone, types what you dictate into any app, and uploads recordings to your Speak AI account for transcription and analysis.

| Platform | Download |
|---|---|
| Mac with Apple silicon, macOS 14 or newer | [Download for Mac](https://download.speakai.co/recorder/mac/Speak-AI-latest-arm64.dmg) |
| Windows | Coming soon |

The Mac link always downloads the newest version.

## What it does

- **Record your microphone** for notes, interviews and in-person meetings
- **Record meetings** with both your voice and the other side of the call. When a known call app is in front, the app asks whether to record. It never starts a recording by itself.
- **Record your screen** or one window, with system audio, your voice and an optional camera bubble
- **Dictate** with a keyboard shortcut and paste the text into the app you are typing in
- **Upload** recordings to your Speak AI account, where they are transcribed and analyzed like any other upload

Recording works without an account. You only need one to upload to Speak AI. Dictation also works without one once you download a local model in **Settings**; without a model it transcribes through your Speak AI account. Sign in from **Settings** when you need it. Recordings stay on your Mac until they upload, and a recording made offline uploads once you are back online.

## Install on a Mac

1. [Download the DMG](https://download.speakai.co/recorder/mac/Speak-AI-latest-arm64.dmg).
1. Open the downloaded file and drag **Speak AI** into **Applications**.
1. Open Speak AI from Applications. The app is notarized by Apple, so it opens without a security warning.
1. Allow microphone access when macOS asks. Screen recording and meeting recording also need **Screen Recording** permission, and pasting dictated text into other apps needs **Accessibility** permission. The app asks for each one the first time you use the feature.

## Updates

Updates are automatic. The app checks for a new version shortly after it opens and every few hours while it runs, and downloads it in the background. The update installs the next time you quit the app, or straight away when you select **Restart and Update** in **Settings**.

To check yourself, open the **Speak AI** menu and select **Check for Updates**. An update never interrupts your work: **Restart and Update** waits until a recording is stopped and saved, or a dictation is finished.

## Windows

The Windows app is coming soon. Until then, record in the browser with [in-app recording](/help/uploads/in-app-recording/), or send the [Meeting Assistant](/help/meeting-assistant/) to your calls.
